Here’s a look at Storm No. 2 near Viola, Kansas, with its hail core lit by the sun.

While my friends chased in Texas on May 25, I opted to see if I could find something more isolated in Kansas. Storms were just popping as I reached south-central Kansas.

I left Childress and headed north. I spotted this unusual swirling cloud feature in the Texas Panhandle.

I targeted south-central Kansas. Southwest of Wichita, storms were forming by mid-afternoon.

It wasn't easy to see the most vigorous storm thanks to all the cells going up around it. I tried to drive into position.

The storm had a wall cloud near Conway Springs (quick shot through the windshield).
The wall cloud got pretty pointy as I tried to get into position.

Then the wall cloud shrunk - but it was still a nice little storm.

I stopped at Viola to watch the cell move toward the northeast. It had some rotation.
The storm had nice inflow and attempted to form a nebulous wall cloud.

Cells continued to form, and this one, with a vigorous core, moved up from the south.
Great core, great light!

Storm No. 1 looked a little less serious as it moved away.

I briefly followed the storms toward Wichita and decided not to chase the cluster into or around the city. There was at least one tornado warning on the cluster later, but I gave up the chase to get into position for the next day.
